We are big fans of these Renault Sport Clio’s here at MSB. We had one in a few years back and were very much impressed, so we are delighted to have another one available for sale as they are truly brilliant hot-hatches.

Hot hatches are such a popular market in the UK and it’s easy to see why – power, performance and often specialised engineering all contribute to making a fun, exciting driving car. The market is flooded with Fiesta ST’s, Corsa VXR’s, VW Polos among other competitors, but what you don’t see too many of is the Renault Clio RS. If you aren’t familiar with this hot hatch then buckle in as you get a lot of car for the money.

At first glance you may think it’s just a standard, run of the mill Renault Clio but it’s far from it. The RS Trophy has several styling features that set it apart from the standard model. For starters, there’s the 18” Black Alloy Wheels, Rear Diffuser with Twin Tail Pipe Exhaust, F1 Style Front Blade, Chequered Flag Style Lights in the front bumper, Red Brake Callipers & Lower Ride Height. The Interior also has clues to suggest this isn’t a standard Clio, it has the Renault Sport Steering Wheel, Red Seatbelts & Renault Sport Dark Carbon Upholstery with Red Stitching. The styling of these RS Clio’s is subtle and understated but still gives off a sporty, stylish & sleek hot-hatch particularly with this one being finished in the Black Paintwork, with Black Alloys, Blacked Out Rear Badges, Carbon-Fibre Look Renault Badges, Privacy Glass.

If you needed further evidence to convince you that this is so much more than your average Renault Clio, you only need to listen to the engine on startup. A fierce, loud sports exhaust system that without a doubt commands your attention. When it comes to hot-hatches and sporty cars, the sound is so important and Renault recognise this. The RS is fitted with ‘RS Sound Pipe’ and to quote the brochure on what it does: “This uses a membrane from the engine bay directly into the cabin to amplify engine noise”

The Clio RS came in two variants: The RS 200 or the RS 220 Trophy, and if you’re buying an RS, you’re going to want the Trophy model (just like this one). The reason for this is it comes with 20 BHP more power & has some key features as standard: Front & Rear Parking Sensors with Parking Camera, Trophy Chassis with 18” Alloy Wheels, Red Brake Callipers, Specific Steering Ratio, Firmer Damping & lower Body Height.

Onto the important bit – how it drives. These Clio RS’s are equipped with a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine and this one as I have previously mentioned, produces a whopping 220 BHP (280 NM of Torque). The engine is complemented nicely by the incredibly smooth & seamless 6 speed automatic EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) Transmission – which also has Paddle Shift. The car is capable of 0-62 MPH in just 6.6 seconds, with a top speed of 146 MPH. It even has Launch Control (ideal for those fast starts if you want to take it onto a track).

The Clio RS is designed to be ‘two cars in one’ and what they mean by this is the car is capable of being a daily driver if that’s what you want, but it’s also capable of being tailored to allow for performance driving or even competition use. With this in mind, they have RS Drive mode selectors which allow you to choose from Normal (everyday driving), Sport or Race mode. Switching to Sport or Race mode increases the performance and sharpens the throttle response. When changing through the modes, the gear shift changes will be altered accordingly to fit the mode you’re in, as will the engine pitch, weight of the power steering etc. Race mode can only be operated in the ‘manual shift’ mode.

The ride quality is firm thanks to the Trophy Chassis and also has a lower ride height than the RS200, sitting lower 20mm on the front & 10mm on the rear. However, if you’re planning on using this as a daily driver you will still find it a comfortable car for commuting or nipping around town. The handling on these is superb, it benefits from being equipped with the RS Diff, an electronic differential that significantly improves the cars cornering grip and handling under acceleration, it even limits understeering and is actually patented by Renault Sprot Technologies.

These cars really need to be driven to be appreciated and we are confident that once you’ve driven one you will be impressed, as for a small hatchback, they really pack a punch. They’re different to their competitors, arguably better value due to the level of engineering & build quality that’s gone into it. They are often overlooked but the RS Clio without question is a great addition to Renault’s existing and well respected hot-hatch pedigree.

A lot of this cars spec has been mentioned above, but a few features that are yet to be spoken about include: 7” R-Link Touch Screen Infotainment System, Sat Nav, Android Auto Compatible, Bluetooth, Front & Rear Parking Sensors, Rear Parking Camera, Power Folding Mirrors, Keyless Entry with Push Button Start, Carpet Boot Liner and Climate Control.

This Clio is in very good condition and does look to have been well cared for by the previous owners. It is of course 7 years old with over 27,000 miles but as you can see from the photographs the car looks excellent and will make a brilliant car for the next owner. To further emphasise how well looked after this car is, it has a 4-stamp history with it never going more than 8,000 miles between services.
